Exploring Movement and Color Through Ceramics

French artist Lorène Cavagna is a ceramist who delves into movement and repetition through her research on glazes. Lorene Cavagna began her ceramic journey in London, where she earned her degree. Two years later, she returned to France, establishing her ceramic workshop in Paris, where she works with stoneware and porcelain.

Fascinated by light, colors, and contrasts, Lorène Cavagna conducts scientific research that allows her to exploit an endlessly varied palette of glazes. The French artist particularly cherishes stoneware for its ability to resist deformation while maintaining surprising delicacy. The clay serves as her canvas, enabling Lorene Cavagna to create dynamic plays of color and light, much like a painter with a canvas.

Techniques and Artistic Vision

One of her primary techniques involves handcrafting petals using the slab-building method. The artist creates wall-mounted contemporary ceramic pieces reminiscent of paintings, as well as works that integrate directly into architectural projects. By repeating her simple forms thousands of times and focusing on their three-dimensional arrangement, she imbues movement into a material that is inherently static. Each of her creations reveals astonishing lightness and an insatiable quest for movement and color, inviting viewers to dream of the countless possibilities this material offers.

Another technique adopts a modern approach to ceramic tiles. This surface treatment results in unique pieces that resemble illustrations. Lorène shapes free-form clay plates, echoing the art of stained glass. Her projects can be entirely conceived and designed by her or developed in collaboration with teams of designers and architects. At the heart of Lorène Cavagna's ceramic work is the desire to enhance spaces by creating movement, depth, and interplay of colors.

The Central Role of Glazes

All of her contemporary ceramics are elevated by the use of glazes, which play a central role in her practice and rhythm her workshop's life. For nearly three years, Lorène Cavagna has been exploring the chemistry of glazes. Each firing provides an opportunity to test, discover, and compose new glazes. She develops combinations of multiple glazes that interact with light, resulting in rich and vibrant colors with infinite variations. To date, she boasts a palette of over 250 unique glazes.
