Strata 9 (2022) is a captivating work by acclaimed artist Jean Boghossian, renowned for his experimental use of fire and smoke in his art. In this striking piece, Boghossian blends abstraction with his signature burning technique, resulting in a mesmerizing interplay of texture, color, and form. In Strata 9, the prominent use of yellow tones adds warmth and vibrancy, contrasting with the raw, charred surfaces created by fire. The subtle gradations of yellow evoke a sense of light and energy, while the scorched patterns beneath suggest transformation and renewal. The piece explores themes of fragility and resilience, with each burn mark telling a story of destruction and creation. Boghossian’s mastery of fire as a medium pushes the boundaries of traditional painting, creating a dynamic, multi-dimensional experience. Strata 9 is an expressive and evocative artwork that will bring depth and boldness to any collection. Unique.
Jean Boghossian, a distinguished artist and member of a long line of jewelers, began his journey in the arts while studying Economics and Sociology at the University of Saint-Joseph in Beirut. The outbreak of the Lebanese Civil War in 1975 prompted his move to Belgium, where he balanced his commitment to the family business with his burgeoning artistic career.
Over thirty years ago, he enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Boitsfort, Brussels, a decision that marked a significant shift in his life. In 1992, he, along with his father and brother, established the Boghossian Foundation at the Villa Empain, a hub dedicated to fostering cultural exchange and artistic exploration.
Boghossian’s work is deeply informed by his cosmopolitan identity and a rich tapestry of historical and cultural experiences. He aims to address contemporary societal complexities, merging diverse influences to cultivate a more equitable form of humanism in the twenty-first century. After years in the jewelry trade, he expresses a profound desire for artistic freedom: “I wanted to pursue a totally free artistic approach. It’s fantastic; it gives me extraordinary energy. When I stand before a two-by-two meter canvas, it becomes a space for creation, a refuge, and a passion.”
A hallmark of Boghossian’s artistic process is his innovative use of fire, exploring the tension between destruction and transformation. Engaging in a dynamic “dance” with flames and smoke, he captures the moment when chaos becomes harmony.
While he shares a conceptual affinity with artists like Claudio Parmiggiani and Yves Klein, Boghossian carves out his own unique path. His techniques involve manipulating the canvas through folding, stapling, covering, and burning, creating a dialogue between intention and chance that results in compelling textures and forms.
Through his art, Jean Boghossian invites viewers to reflect on the interplay of chaos and order, urging a deeper understanding of the complexities of our shared humanity.
